Soffit / Fascia and Your Roof

Soffit and fascia materials can come in several different styles. Fascia installation is a vital aspect of proper roof construction. The fascia is found underneath the roof line just behind the gutters. It extends around the entire building. Wood is the most commonly used material for fascia although vinyl and aluminum are also used. Fascia board is a type of roof trim which is commonly used on houses. It is mounted on the exposed ends of rafters or the top of exterior walls to create a layer between the edge of the roof and the outside. The fascia on a home serves two functions, both as decorative as well as a protective shell. The fascia board is installed at the edges of the rafter’s tails or trusses on your roof. This provides the home’s roof with a more appealing sightline. The fascia board also serves to protect the inside of the home’s attic from damage due to weather or animals. Not all styles of home design feature fascia board, but many do.

In situations where the edge of the roof has no overhang and is flush with the wall, the fascia board may be designed to include vents in the soffit, while in some cases, soffit may be under the drip eave, hidden behind the fascia board. The fascia boards on your home also aid in supporting and securing your gutter system.

Fascia Board Maintenance

The fascia board may require maintenance periodically. If your fascia board rots due to damage caused by water, the water damage could spread to the rafters or roof trusses. If you notice rotting fascia on your home, you should take steps in having it replaced quickly. If only a small area is rotting away, we can replace only the section that is bad, not the entire length of fascia board; instead, people can cut a piece of wood and replace a damaged area, making sure that the seams of the boards meet on a rafter tail so that they can be nailed in place to hold tightly.

What is ‘Soffit’

In reference to the term soffit, it is described as the underside of any structure. The soffit is generally located on the outside of the home under the drip eaves. The soffit extends from the outside wall to the fascia or end of the drip eave. Clogged gutters will cause water to penetrate up and behind your gutter and rot your fascia board and soffit. This damage usually isn’t noticed until it’s too late. The gutter will fall off with the fascia board rotting away from the rafter tails.

Aluminum

Installing aluminum soffit and fascia will help with preserving your wood fascia board, rake boards and roof eaves. Aluminum fascia will protect your home’s exterior from moisture, rot, pests and structural damage while providing low maintenance and care. There will be no more painting needed for these kinds of materials.

Most wood fascia today is clad with aluminum, and when selecting a color of soffit & fascia, it is a good rule of thumb to choose your soffit, fascia and gutter to all be the same color. Choosing one color will give the appearance of cleaner looking lines. Many colors are available to match your home.

Aluminum Soffit Panels

Aluminum soffit panels are available in solid and vented styles. They are available in many colors that match siding, fascia, and gutter colors.

Harris Exteriors & More uses an aluminum break to make and custom fit your own aluminum fascia. We will install your custom bent fascia flush against your fascia board and it will slide up behind your gutters. We also clad the rake boards with non-venting soffit. If your home roof rakes has existing drip edge, the top edge of the aluminum fascia should be tucked under the drip edge and fastened to ensure complete coverage.

Custom Fascia

Harris Exterior installers create your custom fascia sizes on site, using a tool called an aluminum metal break. A break is basically a long workbench-like bending tool used for bending metals. Often, small bends are made with hand benders. When we install aluminum fascia, we start from one side and lap each piece going the same direction. We attach the fascia with color-matched aluminum trim nails. Darker colors fascia may need to be pre-drilled before installing due to the shock of the fascia aluminum from a driving nail. When replacing your gutters or roof, be sure to inquire about soffit and fascia. Its relatively low cost and care-free maintenance is well worth preventing damage from the weather for years of wear to your home.

What is Attic Ventilation?

A proper attic ventilation system allows a continual flow of outside air into the attic through your home’s soffit ventilation system.

Styles Available

Wood

Wood offers a more traditional look to homes. If you live in Chicagoland’s Western & Northern Suburbs and have wooden siding on your home, then this style will be perfect for your home’s exterior!

Aluminum

The aluminum used in the soffits and fascias is incredibly durable, which allows for it to stand up against high winds and stormy weather. This type of gutter accessory can be installed fast.

Vinyl

Vinyl materials are yet another very popular gutter accessory these days with homeowners. They’re very cost-effective and can be installed quickly. Harris Exteriors & More offers vinyl soffits and fascias in a number of different colors to best match the rest of the outside of your home.

Fiber Cement

There are a lot of benefits to using fiber cement with the most important advantage being its durability. This type of soffit and fascia can be used in virtually any type of climate and has been proven to be a lot more versatile than vinyl or wooden soffits and fascias. Fiber cement soffit and fascias are also resilient against cracking, bowing, shrinking, or chipping.
